But I love comments ;)

I'd prefer to let my readers comment freely (without moderation) and take the burden of managing spam rather than making readers manage that burden.

My blog is popular, but not so much that I can't cope ;)

Hi Donna,

It's a problem that was wasting a great deal of my time as well. Comments are vital to weblogging, yet I decided to close them down and try to do more with trackback links as well as using more quotes within my own entries. It may not be the best solution, but I no longer have to take all the trash out.

Best regards,
Brian

I thought of that, but sometimes do get interesting comments on older entries...I close comments on the first year or so of entries.

One simple thing I do on Zen Haiku is to only allow the last 2 or 3 posts (at most) to have comments open. While on some level this is unfortunate, it does make you a much smaller target. I've noticed a slight tendency for legitimate comments on older posts to be less interesting anyway (or maybe I'm just sick of that topic by then).
